Express your gratitude for the joy Jane Austen's masterpieces have given you by hanging a print of this original hand-painted tribute in your home. Because Austen lived before the age of photography and no formal portrait that we know of was ever undertaken of her, our image of the author is informed by her sister Cassandra's few sketches and the written testimony of contemporaries. The best-known of Cassandra Austen's images was not considered a good likeness by the family, meaning that modern Janeites must use a degree of imagination to picture Jane as best we can.
This loving portrait of Jane Austen is based upon my research of all sources available to me and a lifelong devotion to her exquisite writings. Here, Jane is pictured at work in Chawton Cottage. Details to notice in this Jane Austen art print include:
- Jane is sitting at the famous little work table, which is on display today at Chawton Cottage.
- She is known to have written on small scraps of paper that could easily be hidden away if she was interrupted. Here, she is penning the line from Mansfield Park, "Her own thoughts and reflections were habitually her best companions." It is a line that has always made me reflect on Jane's extraordinary mental gifts.
- She is dressed in morning attire, including the delicate India muslin shawl, which is preserved at Chawton Cottage, as is the turquoise ring on her hand. She is also wearing the jeweled cross which she owned and which can be seen as both a touchstone of one of the major plot twists in Mansfield Park as well as a token of the author's sincere faith.
- Draped over the sofa is the patchwork quilt which Jane and Cassandra Austen made with Mrs. Austen. I like to think the ladies of the house might have just set the quilt aside after repairing a little flaw in it.
- Out the right-hand window we glimpse a moment, as if in Jane's imagination, from Pride and Prejudice as Mr. Darcy and Miss Elizabeth Bennet finally come to an understanding as they stroll in the sunshine.
- The left-hand window offers a pleasant puzzle for true Jane Austen fans. Oil transparencies of the kind mentioned in the East Room in Mansfield Park have been affixed to the panes. Each transparency represents one of Austen's six major novels. When you bring this work home, you will be able to study them in detail and guess the identity of each panel.
There are as many reasons to love Jane Austen's novels as there are readers of them. Whether it is the brilliant storylines, the unforgettable characters, the elegant language, the manners and customs, the wonderful wardrobes, or some other aspect of the novels which has made you a devoted fan, offering Jane a little place in your home is a gracious way to thank her. Perhaps you might even put a little vase of fresh flowers under the print as a token of love.
