"There was Lobelia. Poor thing, she looked very old and thin when they rescued her from a dark and narrow cell. She insisted on hobbling out on her own feet; and she had such a welcome and there was such clapping and cheering when she appeared, leaning on Frodo's arm but still clutching her umbrella, that she was quite touched and drove away in tears. She had never in her life been popular before." - The Return of the King, Book VI, Chapter 8, The Scouring of the Shire

Calling all Lobelia Sackville-Baggins fans! The Tolkien community is filled with admirers of this peppery, strong and courageous hobbit elder who can outdo Bilbo as a burglar and take on a whole group of ruffians with her trusty umbrella. This original, hand-done painting features not only Lobelia’s toughness, but her turn towards mercy as she is rescued by Frodo from the Lockholes of Michel Delving to the cheers of a crowd. You can learn more about this scene in my illustrated blog post: The Liberation of Lobelia and the Gandalf-ication of Frodo, but in the meantime, here are some things to notice about this heartwarming piece:

  • As the Shire is liberated from Saruman’s colonization, the dark clouds are blowing away and the sun is shining again
  • Lobelia’s transformation is signified by the dead, prickly thistles behind her as she turns to accept a fresh bouquet of the year’s last wildflowers from a hobbit lass who has decked herself with flowers to celebrate the freedom that has been restored to the Shire
  • Frodo bears tokens of his own transformation, from being the hobbit who once wished his cousin Bilbo had killed Gollum, to now being earnestly resolved that no more unnecessary violence will take place; he is wearing the Lothlórien brooch as a symbol of his journey, and his star amulet as a sign of his own sufferings
  • The kindness of the hobbits is present in their offerings of bread, their sweeping bows of honor to a local hero, and their hearty cheers for Lobelia
  • Note the two young hobbits standing in the grass above the root cellar. They are watching how their elders behave, and it is good to think they witness the end of long enmity between Frodo and Lobelia who spend the rest of their time in Middle-earth sharing out peace and plenty with others

Whether you are a staunch Lobelia fan, or simply can’t get enough of the life lessons learned from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings on such important topics as mercy, love, and courage in hard times, hanging this museum-quality print in your home will help you celebrate what you value and spark the sharing of great stories with you family and guests.

This piece is dedicated to a valued and honored patron and tremendous Tolkien fan, Ms. Bonnie Marques.
