“She did not answer, but as he looked at her it seemed to him that something in her softened, as though a bitter frost were yielding at the first faint presage of Spring.” - The Return of the King, Book 6, Chapter 5: The Steward and the King

The characters of Éowyn and Faramir are some of the most exquisitely drawn in all of J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium, and the magnificent story of them finding first fellowship and then love amid great personal loss and the wreckage of war has made this couple a favorite for countless readers. In Faramir’s eyes, Éowyn is at last seen and heard for the full person she is, and is given choices about her future. In Éowyn’s eyes, Faramir will at last come first with a loved one.

As a Tolkien illustrator, I was so strongly influenced by Legolas’ description of Minas Tirith that my impression of the place was a somewhat cold and stony one until I paid better attention to the setting in which Éowyn and Faramir meet, walk, and begin to recover; they are in the garden of the Houses of Healing, where there are trees and lawns. It occurred to me that the healers would tend an herb garden as a necessity to their work. Professor Tolkien’s likening of Gondor to the Mediterranean and the description of the herbs of Ithilien helped me to fill in the blanks about what might be growing in this special garden. Each plant I have included represents either a specific medicinal virtue or a trait of the characters, which you can read more about in Éowyn and Faramir and the Houses that Healed Them.

I would like to offer a special dedication of this painting to Mr. Alan Sisto and Dr. Sara Brown for their outstanding commentary on the intricate and moving tale of Éowyn and Faramir, as presented on the Prancing Pony Podcast. I highly recommend an attentive listen to the insights shared in the episodes pertaining to “The Steward and the King”.

If Éowyn and Faramir are among your favorite characters in The Lord of the Rings, and you are looking for Lord of the Rings art that joyfully celebrates what you honor in this love story, prints of this original, hand-painted illustration will make a corner of your home a very special feature.
