“...and last came one who seemed the least, less tall than the others, and in looks more aged, grey-haired and grey-clad, and leaning on a staff. But Círdan from their first meeting at the Grey Havens divined in him the greatest spirit and the wisest; and he welcomed him with reverence, and he gave to his keeping the Third Ring, Narya the Red.” - Unfinished Tales: The Istari
The meeting on the shores of Middle-earth between Círdan, Master of the Grey Havens, and the emissary who was originally known as Olórin remains shrouded in secrecy across the Third Age. Unfinished Tales states that perhaps only Círdan, Elrond and Galadriel ever understand that the Istari have been sent from Valinor. Equally secret is the gift of the Ring of Fire, which Círdan offers to enhance the work of kindling hearts that is the task assigned to the figure many will come to know and love as Gandalf.
In illustrating this scene, I particularly wanted to be faithful to the knowledge we have regarding Gandalf’s humble physical stature. While he looks like a grand figure to the little hobbits, Gandalf is only 5’ 6” tall, and would have appeared rather short in the company of the elves, who were routinely a foot or more taller than this. Círdan, in particular, is referenced as being very tall, and he is also so wise and ancient that he acts with great insight in offering the newcomer both his gift and his friendship.
Details you might like to notice about this painting:
- The three gulls are a reference to the three Elven Rings, in addition to being a reminder of the spiritual significance they have in the lives of the elves who must eventually make their westward journey. Círdan has delayed his own journey for thousands of years to help others make the crossing.
- After much deliberation as to how the actual architecture of the Grey Havens might appear, I determined that the aesthetics of Finnish towers and cultural places fit well with the Finnish influence on the high elven language, Quenya.
- In studying the Gulf of Lune, I realized that it is a greater distance in length than the human eye can see. From the Havens along most of the shore, the view would be of a bay without any sight of the sea. I’ve tried to reflect the reality of that geography.
The greatness of Gandalf’s saving works in Middle-earth are only magnified by the realization that he has come as a small old man, and is subject to hunger, cold and danger. In Tolkien, power for good does not equate with size. By bringing home this original hand-done illustration of Círdan and Gandalf meeting at the Grey Havens, may you find it a source of quiet inspiration. It is a very peaceful but powerful subject for reflection.
Special dedication: I humbly dedicate this painting to Professor Tom Shippey. His scholarship has kindled my heart like the Ring of Fire, and has acted as my cherished guide to better understanding the complexity and beauty of Tolkien’s works. I am forever in his debt for an enlightenment which has immeasurably enriched my life and work.
