“It was my lot to take the Road, and I came to the Bridge of Mitheithel, and left a token there, nigh on seven days ago.” - The Fellowship of the Ring, Book 1, Chapter 12: Flight to the Ford

This original painting of Glorfindel leaving the pale green elf-stone as he rides Asfaloth across the Last Bridge captures a moment of great hope and help in The Lord of the Rings. As readers, we encounter many figures of awe and majesty in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium, but few can compare with Glorfindel.

In the First Age, Glorfindel was the lord of Gondolin’s House of the Golden Flower. He died fighting a balrog all alone on a pinnacle of rock, and the eagle Thorondor bore his body away. From there, his spirit journeyed to the Halls of Mandos, from which he was sent back to Middle-earth as an emissary of the Valar. As such, he is a being of great and unusual power for good.

What a relief it is to know that Glorfindel has set out from Rivendell in aid of the company of the hobbits and Strider, who are being pursued by the Black Riders. In fact, Glorfindel is so shining a figure that the enemy flees before his face. This is the kind of ally we all hope to have in a perilous realm.

When you get this fine art print home, you will see the gleam of the green beryl, and you may hear the rushing of the Mitheithel and the clatter of Asfaloth’s hoofs on the ancient stone bridge. Fill a special place in your home with the glorious hope of Glorfindel.
