“In this meeting there may be more than chance; but the purpose is not clear to me, and I fear to say too much.” - The Fellowship of the Ring, Book 1, Chapter 3: Three is Company

The hobbits’ magnificent encounter with Gildor Inglorion and his folk above Woodhall is one of The Lord of the Rings’ first episodes of the ‘recovery, escape, and consolation’ described by Dr. Verlyn Flieger. Frodo, Sam, and Pippin move from a place of terrible fear in being pursued by the Black Riders to one of both enchantment and momentary safety amongst the elves.

The meeting with Gildor shines out in my memory from when my father first read it to me. The gold and silver lights of the elves, the glimmer at their feet, and their beautiful language are unforgettable. As an adult Tolkien student, what stands out to me is Gildor Inglorion’s remark ‘more than chance’. Being an elf, his awareness of Eru and Valinor and the long defeat lade this remark with layers and layers of meaning, which may well go right over the hobbits’ heads. All they may know in this moment is the great relief they feel at being welcomed into the elves’ little circle of light.

This fine art print of Frodo, Sam, Gildor Inglorion and his folk is one you could look at again and again while reflecting on the brilliance of J.R.R. Tolkien and the awe of the elves.
