"'Come dear folk!' she said, taking Frodo by the hand. 'Laugh and be merry! I am Goldberry, daughter of the River...Fear nothing! For tonight you are under the roof of Tom Bombadil.'" - The Fellowship of the Ring, Book 1, Chapter 7: In the House of Tom Bombadil

Imagine escaping from dreadful Old Man Willow and the eerie dusk falling in the Old Forest, crossing the threshold of an unlooked-for refuge, and finding yourself welcomed into the golden light of a warm room by a hostess such as this. Goldberry offers the hobbits the protection of the Bombadil house, merry laughter, song, food, a lovely room and a greatly enchanting mystery about her association with water in this unforgettable scene of recovery, escape and consolation in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of The Rings.

It seems to me that I have been imaging Goldberry’s green-and-silver-bedewed gown belted with gold flag iris and forget-me-knots my whole life, and it was a joy to design and paint, as were the basins of water lilies, the lovely lamps, the warm hearth, and the many gleaming candles. And it seems that the Tolkien community will never tire of wondering, “Who is Goldberry? What is a daughter of the River? Why is a rainy day her washing day? Does she have some influence over the weather? Does she weave the matting that hangs in the hobbits’ guest room? How ancient is she? Who is Tom Bombadil?” and similar wonderful questions. I actually like that the Professor provided no definitive answer, because it leaves us with such an enjoyable mystery and our own imaginings of being the guest of a sort of water spirit whose dwelling offers safety, merriment and freedom from fear of nightly noises.

This is truly the stuff of Faërie that no one ever wrote better than J.R.R. Tolkien, and your print from this original, hand-done painting will bring charm and wonder to any corner of your home. The hospitality of Goldberry is something we can all aspire to, and she is a wonderful icon of goodness and friendship in Middle-earth.
